Wikipedia / 1962 American Football League draft
The 1962 American Football League draft was held on December 2, 1961 for rounds 1-25 and February 23, 1962 for rounds 26-28. Rounds 29-34 included players drafted by the NFL in 1961 and occurred before the 1962 AFL draft. With the first overall pick, the Oakland Raiders selected quarterback Roman Gabriel.
In addition to the normal draft, the AFL held an "equalization draft" on August 15th, in which teams were able to draft players off the rosters of other teams - or their own. The two lowest-ranking teams, Oakland and Denver, were allowed to select up to 6 players and the other six were allowed to select up to 4.
