Wikipedia / Comamonadaceae

The Comamonadaceae are a family of Gram-negative bacteria in the order Burkholderiales. The family is phenotypically and metabolically diverse. Cultivated members include aerobic organotrophs, anaerobic denitrifiers and iron-reducing bacteria, hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria, phototrophs, and fermentative bacteria. Most described members have been isolated from water or soil, although some occur in animal-associated habitats or have been recovered from human clinical samples.

Taxonomy

The family was established for the acidovorans rRNA complex, with Comamonas as its type genus.

Genome-based and 16S rRNA analyses showed that several genera formerly assigned to Comamonadaceae formed a distinct sister lineage. This lineage is now classified as the family Sphaerotilaceae. Genera now placed in Sphaerotilaceae include Leptothrix, Sphaerotilus, Caldimonas, Ideonella, and Roseateles.

Genera

As of August 2026, the following 40 genera have validly published names and are accepted by LPSN as members of Comamonadaceae:
